Rapid Diagnostic Test for the detection of Toxoplasma in cats.
Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is one of the most widely spread parasites in the world. It can infect most warm-blooded animals, including pets, livestock, birds, and humans. However, the only known definitive hosts for T. gondii are members of the family Felidae. Infection of T. gondii is widespread in cats, but clinical disease is rare. Up to 50% of cats (especially free-roaming cats) have antibodies against T. gondii. IgM antibodies will increase rapidly within a week of infection and maintain the peak level for over three months. IgG antibodies indicate the cat has been infected with Toxoplasma for a while.
