Oxytetracycline (as hydrochloride) 200mg/mL in a clear, yellow, aqueous solution for injection.

 

Action:
Inhibits protein synthesis in the cell wall of the target micro-organism.

Indication:
Broad spectrum antibiotic for treatment and prevention of diseases caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms, such as those that may cause pneumonia, mastitis, metritis, leptospirosis and pasteurellosis in cattle, sheep and pigs.

 

Contraindication:
Severe liver or kidney insufficiency. Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. 

Not for intravenous injection.

Toxicity/Overdose/Antidote: Mice, rabbits, rats and dogs tolerate 50mg/kg.

 

DOSAGE:
Give by deep i/m injection into the anterior half of the neck.

ALL SPECIES: Give 20mg/kg, which is 1mL/10kg. No more than 20mL should be administered at any one injection site. With severe infection, the same dose may be repeated after 48 hours.

Side Effects:
General toxicity is low, although collapse has been reported in weak and debilitated animals.

Special Precautions:
Occasional anaphylactic or allergic reactions can occur with the use of oxytetracycline in hypersensitive animals. Adrenaline, antihistamines and/or corticosteroids are indicated in such cases. Use of tetracyclines during the period of tooth development, including late pregnancy, may lead to tooth discolouration.

 

Withholding Times:


MILK:

Cattle: Milk intended for sale for human consumption must be discarded during treatment and for not less than 14 milkings or approximately 168 hours following the last treatment.

Sheep: Milk intended for sale for human consumption must be discarded during treatment and for not less than 10 days following the last treatment.

 

MEAT:

Cattle producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 21 days of the last treatment.

Sheep producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 28 days of the last treatment.

Pigs producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 63 days of the last treatment.
